Summer Internships: Joshua VanGorden

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Ferris State UniversityJoshua VanGorden

He is: A senior from Kentwood, majoring in Advertising and Integrated Marketing Communications.

How did you find your internship? “My project management professor, Dan Turri, suggested I use New Holland as my interview. The interview became an extended lunch meeting with Taylor Remy, the National Event & Sponsorship Coordinator for New Holland. From there, I maintained a relationship with Taylor, that eventually led me to apply and secure my internship with the company.”

Any advice for other students seeking internships? “I’d tell students to be proactive, don’t settle for the first or most accessible job you find. There are super cool internships out there, but you need to make connections and get people to really like you, if you want to be happy with your job.”

AMA. I was a member for two years and I was on the e-board as the vice president of professional development for my senior year.

Involvement with campus groups at Ferris: “The AMA. I was a member for two years, and I was on the e-board, as the vice president of professional development for my senior year.”

Which of Ferris’ core values is most significant to you? Opportunity. There are opportunities every day to further yourself personally and professionally. Allowing these opportunities to slip past you is easy, if you’re complacent.

How are you making a difference at your internship? “I’m giving support to the events team and marketing department with a different perspective, and, I believe, an ambitious mindset. Hopefully, I can be the mind and voice that brings a national event series to New Holland. Breweries are obviously

judged by their products, but they’re also given credit for the parties they throw. New Holland is going on 20 years of business and I think it is time for the company to have an event with national recognition, similar to Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp or New Belgium Tour de Fat.”
