Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.
Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet: Emma Lavengood
She is: A senior from Fruitport, Mich. studying Public Relations in the College of
Business.
Internship: Lavengood is completing her internship at Portrait Communications located in London, England. She is completing her for-credit internship through the College of Business while interning abroad. Portrait Communications is a public relations agency that specializes in home interiors, design, and gifting of all sorts.
What she is learning: Lavengood writes press releases, edits images and prepares for Portrait’s press show. She researches and scans coverage in newspapers and magazines of Portrait’s clients on a daily basis. “My favorite part is seeing the new products before they actually come out. It’s such a good feeling after all the work is done, seeing our clients’ products in the press,” Lavengood said.
What she is involved in: She devotes her time and skills to the Ferris State Public Relations Student Society of America chapter as well as His House Christian Fellowship.
Her future plans: Lavengood plans to graduate in May 2016 and hopes to work at a public relations agency in a big city upon graduation.
