PR Major Gains Social Media Experience and More at Grand Rapids Public Museum Internship

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet: Betsy Garbe:

Betsy GarbeShe is: Garbe is a senior from Allegan Mich, and a senior in the Public Relations Program.

Internship: Garbe is interning at the Grand Rapids Public Museum as their Marketing and Public Relations Intern.

What she is learning: On a daily basis, she posts a lot on social media that are going to reach their demographic and get them interested in the museum. She has gotten to learn a lot about media, and go to events that help promotion for the museum. As more events come up in the fall she’s gotten to learn about that and help promote these, whether it’s through events or social media.

What she is involved in: Garbe is a member of Public Relations Student Society of America, which proved to be helpful with her internship. She got a lot of experience in working with a group setting with projects and events.

Her future plans: She hopes she can stay in Grand Rapids and would love to do something with media.

Her advice: Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be persistent.
