Ferris Ranked Seventh in U.S. News and World Report for Best Online Grad Nursing for Veterans

Ferris State University’s Master of Science in Nursing ranked seventh, nationally, on a U.S. News and World Report list of the top online graduate nursing programs for veterans.

Ferris’ MSN has previously ranked prominently among the “Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs” by U.S. News and World Report. The latest ranking’s methodology underscores the value of “affordable, accessible and reputable” distance education for students, including veterans. The report states that schools listed in the rankings “ … are the best online master’s in nursing degree programs that offer a wide range of benefits for veterans.”

“We are pleased that Ferris’ graduate Nursing program has again been ranked in the top 25 of the nation’s best online graduation nursing programs by U.S. News and World Report,” said Deborah Thalner, executive director of online learning in Ferris’ Extended and International Operations division. “We are even more excited that we are being recognized for our desire to work with veterans and their families.”

The top 10 for “Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs for Veterans” includes:

  1. St. Xavier University in Chicago
  2. East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.
  3. Duquesne University in Pittsburgh
  4. Ball State University in Muncie, Ind.
  5. Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas
  6. Clarkson College in Omaha, Neb.
  7. Ferris State University
  8. Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
  9. Michigan State University in East Lansing
  10. Regis University in Denver

Thalner cited Ferris’ ability to deliver a flexible and student-focused online education experience as a distinguishing characteristic.

“Veterans can have many obstacles returning to school and seeking advanced degrees,” she said. “Our flexibility and student-focused faculty and staff create an environment where veterans can be successful and achieve their educational goals.”

The MSN ranked 24th in “Best Online Nursing Programs” in the U.S. News World Report rankings that were released in January 2014. Ferris and UM-Flint were the top-ranked online nursing schools in Michigan. Primary factors considered in those rankings included: faculty credentials, graduation rates, as well as student services and technologies.

Ferris’ School of Nursing enrolls approximately 100 students in its MSN program, which features a learner-centered curriculum designed to equip nurses with the knowledge and skills that are vital for a variety of advanced specialty practice roles. The MSN features three concentrations in specialty leadership roles: nursing administration, nursing informatics and nursing education. As a fully online program, the university attracts students and instructors from across the country to create a diverse student population as well as instructional experts in nursing leadership roles. Ferris’ graduate nursing program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.
