College of Business Professor Conati Named Educator of the Year

John Conati, leftThe Printing Industries of Michigan, in conjunction with five Detroit-area graphic-related clubs, named Ferris State University faculty member John Conati its 2013-14 Educator of the Year. The recognition was part of a celebration of National Print Week at the annual Ben Franklin Award Dinner in Livonia on Jan. 14.

Mike Medved, Michigan Print Week coordinator, served as the event’s master of ceremonies. Medved noted that an outstanding industrial trainer or an educator in graphic communications, printing or graphic design is picked, annually, as a recipient of the award. He added that the educator chosen for the award, Conati, demonstrated a passion for passing knowledge to students to benefit the graphic communications industry.

“I think that John Conati has earned this honor through his educational reputation and service to our industry,” Medved said.

Conati was introduced and presented the award by longtime colleague and friend, Pat Klarecki, who also is a faculty member in Ferris’ College of Business.

“When I read the inscription on this plaque, it occurred to me that one might think of this award as an individual honor, but I recognize this as an achievement of all the people in my life who have influenced me throughout my career,” Conati said as he addressed a group of 260 graphic professionals at the dinner.

Conati also thanked individuals he described as the many influential people who have mentored him throughout his career in education. He added that the success of his students is what motivates him to constantly strengthen his profession.

Conati, a Ferris faculty member since 1990, was joined at the dinner by family, friends, colleagues and students as he was recognized.

Other individuals were honored at the event held at Laurel Manor. Harry Brookes, of ArborOakland, was named Individual of the Year, and Graphics East, Inc., was named Corporation of the Year.
