Ferris Professors Named to List of Top 25 STEM Professors in Michigan

The 2013 list highlights post-secondary educators who have been awarded recently for excellence in the classroom, on campus and/or in the community.

“It was extremely humbling to find out about this nomination,” said Raghunandan, a professor in Ferris’ Michigan College of Optometry. “The nomination highlights the role that educators play to make sure students’ experiences extend beyond the classroom.”

Raghunandan, who has been teaching at Ferris since 2006, is the recipient of the 2013 Distinguished Teacher Award and the 2011-12 Michigan Optometric Student Association Choice Award for Outstanding Professor.

Franklund, an associate professor and coordinator of Ferris’ Biology program, received the university’s Distinguished Teacher Award in 2012.

“I hope that the recognition that Dr. Raghunandan and I have received will serve to increase our visibility in the state,” said Franklund, who has been teaching at Ferris since 2006. “I believe that we have a lot to offer. Ferris has a unique educational mission that is reflected in our approach to teaching in the sciences and technology.”

The list was developed by to recognize STEM professors across the state of Michigan who have sustained not only research and teaching careers over the years, but also those who may be new to the STEM field and are making a large impact academically.
