Digital Media Students to Launch Demo Game for Spain-Based Company

Digital Animation and Game DesignStudents in Ferris State University’s School of Digital Media are designing a demo game for a Spain-based software media company that will be releasing a new game engine this year.

Plain Concepts is designing Wave Engine, a multi-platform video game engine expected to be released in February. Jordin Littmann, a senior from Oxford, Mich., majoring in Digital Animation and Game Design, is leading the Ferris student role in the project.

Littmann did an internship last summer at the company’s Madrid headquarters. After Littmann completed her internship, Martin Lier, a DAGD professor who coordinates the internship program, asked if Plain Concepts would consider allowing a group of 10 students to continue working with the company.

Students benefit from being able to add this work to their portfolio and demo reel,” Lier said. “It also could lead to additional internship opportunities and possibly employment opportunities down the road.”

The game is an adventure-based arcade intended for mobile devices, including phones and tablets. The students are responsible for many aspects of the game, including 3D assets, physics, sensors, levels and use-touch capabilities.

More than 200 students are enrolled in Ferris’ School of Digital Media, which offers three programs: DAGD, Digital Media Software Engineering, and Television and Digital Media Production. The DAGD program is based in Grand Rapids.
