Ferris Alumnus, Social Media Energy Partner with Ferris for Hockey YouTube Contest

Social Media EnergyFerris State University alumnus Luke Wyckoff, founder and chief visionary officer for Social Media Energy, is a big fan of the Bulldog hockey team.

As the Ferris hockey team advanced to the Frozen Four for the first time in school history, Wyckoff was excited about an opportunity to help promote the Bulldogs and showcase the enthusiasm of students for the sport through social media. Fans eager to score two tickets to watch the Bulldogs in the Frozen Four in Tampa, Fla., now have an opportunity thanks to a mini-movie video contest spearheaded by Wyckoff, a 1993 graduate of Ferris’ College of Business with a degree in Marketing/Sales.

To prove who ranks as the most enthusiastic Ferris hockey fan, contest participants are being asked to submit a 30-second video that demonstrates their Bulldog fanaticism. Wyckoff sees this contest as an opportunity to give back to the university, strengthen excitement around the Bulldogs’ trip to the Frozen Four and generate pro-Ferris activity through social media.

“I’ve always been a huge supporter of Ferris State University,” he said. “This is a time for all Ferris fans to rally around a Bulldog team that is truly making history. As a business owner and graduate of Ferris, I felt like it was my responsibility to give back to the team and university that gave me the tools to be successful in business.”

Social media is the ideal platform for Wyckoff.

“This is a historic time for Ferris to really be put on the national stage,” he said. “I wanted to do my part, to drive as much excitement across the world using digital media to rally the students and alumni.”

The contest began on Tuesday, March 27 and the entry deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Monday, April 2.  Contest participants can enter as many videos as they would like. Each submission must be original and created entirely by the entrant. Each finalist’s submission will be posted on YouTube. The public will be allowed to view each finalist’s submission and post appropriate comments in accordance with YouTube policy. A panel of community judges will select from the finalists one winner on or about Tuesday, April 3. The decisions of the community judges will be based on five criteria: creativity, concept, originality, information and overall presentation.

“This mini-movie video competition is a simple way for alumni and students to let the team know how excited we all are for their great accomplishments,” Wyckoff said. “Giving away two tickets to the Frozen Four, for the greatest fan, is a way of saying thanks for all of the support of Ferris State Hockey.”

The FSU Alumni Association is excited about the enthusiasm of Wyckoff, one of its long-time leaders.

“Luke has been a leader of the FSU Alumni Association for nearly two decades, and with his help, we have been able to keep many of our graduates and fans who reside in the Denver, Colo., area and beyond, engaged with the university,” said Jeremy Mishler, director of Alumni Relations and Advancement Operations as well as executive director of the FSU Alumni Association. “We are grateful for his energy, creativity and commitment to help provide us this exciting mini-video contest through his company SME as we all work together to reach out and involve all of our constituents with the celebration of this historic moment for Ferris State University and its hockey team.”

On Thursday, April 5, the Bulldogs play Union at 4:30 p.m. in the first national semi-final before Minnesota faces Boston College at 8 p.m. in the second at the Frozen Four. The two winners play for the national championship at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 7. All games will be played in the Tampa Bay Times Forum.
