Angellotti's Internship Experience Takes Her to Detroit and WDIV-TV

Each year, hundreds of Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through an internship. The experience of an internship also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills, and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require an internship, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Students are participating in various internships in a variety of locations this summer. Meet Alyssa Angellotti:

Alyssa Angellotti

Who: A senior from Riverview, Mich., majoring in Advertising and Integrated Marketing Communications

Internship: WDIV-TV (Channel 4) in Detroit, an affiliate of NBC.

What she’s learning: Angellotti is working on a promotion with the Detroit television station called Vote 4 the Best; she is responsible for handling social media and the online database, which includes accepting business nominations, recommendations and business claims. She also inputs sales orders and other duties for the station’s advertising executives.

“I’m learning so much about the industry I didn’t know before, such as how executives found their clients and how each one has their own selling techniques,” said Angellotti, who is completing her internship unpaid. “I’m learning about how television advertising really works and what happens behind the scenes of promotions.”

How she’s benefitting: Angellotti finds her internship beneficial because of the daily observation of seeing how people perform their job.

“I enjoy the interaction I get to have with the different people who work at Channel 4,” said Angellotti. “I enjoy seeing the different personalities in each of the advertising executives, and being able to see how each one sells is very interesting.”

Goal for the future: Angellotti plans to move to either downtown Detroit or to Texas to pursue a position with an advertising agency.
