BIG RAPIDS – Annually, a Ferris State University student benefits from the Michigan Garden Club Scholarship. This year, Courtney Johnson of Levering was the 2008-09 scholarship recipient. Johnson is a student in the Ornamental Horticulture Technology program at Ferris.
The scholarship has helped defray the cost of attending school for countless students over the years thanks to the commitment and dedication of one Michigan Garden Club member in particular: Betty Godbold of Big Rapids.
Godbold, a member of the Big Rapids Garden Club since 1964, has been the driving force behind the scholarship.
With the mission of the Michigan Garden Club to provide educational opportunities and resources, among other opportunities, through not just gardening, but community service, scholarships, and social and youth activities, Godbold feels the scholarship made available to students at Ferris is a good outreach opportunity for the club.
The Michigan Garden Club was founded in 1931 as The Federated Garden Clubs of Michigan, Inc. Today the club has branches across the state, including Big Rapids.
Godbold has a special certification in landscape design and has held several positions within the organization throughout the years, including Loda Lake chairman and the State Scholarship chairman for the National State Garden Clubs.
The scholarship is available to students enrolled in such fields of study as horticulture, landscape design, plant pathology, land management and other related fields.
