Frankfort Woman Transfers from Navy to Maritime Career

Stormi Sutter Graduates in May from Both NMC Maritime Academy and Ferris State

After ten years in the Navy, Stormi Sutter was sidelined by an injury and began to explore other career options. She tried jobs in construction, ski instructing and marine patrol before discovering the Great Lakes Maritime Academy at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City—a program which includes a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Ferris State University.

Sutter will complete her studies in May 2007 and a final “sea project” during the summer. Meanwhile, the job market couldn’t be better. “There’s a 100 percent placement for Maritime graduates,” she said, “and right now I’m evaluating two job offers.”

“I’ve had a top-notch education through Ferris,” Sutter said. “The core group in Traverse City is just awesome and I’m considering an online master’s program.” She thinks the Ferris bachelor’s degree is a smart addition to the Maritime program because it gives graduates more choices—now and in the future.

Sutter is one of three women in the Great Lakes Maritime Academy—among 120 students. “With my military background, being a female wasn’t a problem,” she said. “You can choose how you convey a message.”

“I’m just focused on doing well on my licensing exams,” Sutter said. “I’ll be 37 years old and I wonder, am I ready?” With Sutter’s background, experience, and spirit, it sounds as if she’s ready for anything.
