Basic Authentication

Microsoft is working to improve security for users of Microsoft Email. Some email client applications utilize an authentication method called Basic Authentication which sends your username and password each time you access your email. To protect your emails and our email system, Microsoft has developed a secure method of authentication called Modern Authentication. Microsoft will end support for Basic Authentication soon.

To protect your email account and Ferris, IT Services (ITS) is ending support for Basic Authentication on March 29. We are ending support ahead of Microsoft so we can work with our users to make necessary changes and avoid any disruption of access or services.

Device/Application

Recommendation

Outlook client users

If you use the Outlook client on your phone, tablet, or computer, or you access your email via a web browser, you do not need to do anything.

iPhone 8 or newer
iPad’s 2018 or newer

Should not have issues if the IOS version is 11 or above. When creating a profile/initial setup user must select Microsoft Exchange instead of outlook.com.

iPhone 7 or older
iPad’s 2017 or older

Will require you to download and configure the “Microsoft Outlook” client for mobile. If it can’t support IOS 14, then the Client will not work. You will need to goto Office.ferris.edu in the web browser on the mobile device.

Android users (phones or tablets)

Will require you to download and configure the “Microsoft Outlook” client for mobile. If the device doesn’t support Android 7, then you will need to goto Office.ferris.edu in the web browser on the mobile device.

Mac or Windows PC users

The native or default mail client for Macs or Windows PCs should work if the system is updated. If you are using an older version of the Mac (10.14 or older) or Windows operating system (Windows 8 or older), your native or default mail client may not support Modern Authentication and you will need to download and set up the Microsoft Outlook client on your device.

Other methods

Other methods exist to access O365, however, they may not work with Modern Authentication, and ITS can only support the methods listed on our website.
