Why did you decide to attend college?

My parents suggested me to go. I decided to go for pre-pharmacy and Ferris State University had a great program.

How did you learn that you were a first generation college student?

My mother told me she never went because she got pregnant and my father graduated high school a year or two before me.

What support system or mentors do you have in college?

One mentor would have to be Gretchen Ochs. She has taught me and advised me throughout my time working for her. My parents and boyfriend are a big support system. They motivate and believe in me no matter what.

What were your personal, family or community strengths that motivated you to attend college?

I came from a more poor family, and I wanted to accomplish my dream to help my parents with everything like they have been doing for me.

What has surprised you most about your college experience so far?

Even though it was a rough start, I have made it on the dean’s list and have been doing wonders. I love college and I love the classes/professors.

What do you hope that you can do with your bachelor’s degree?

I see myself getting a career as an actuarialist for a company and starting my life with my family and finally getting to help my parents.

What advice do you have to a new first generation college student considering or pursuing a degree at Ferris?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions to the students, school or someone you know that has gone to college. Always do FAFSA and study hard.
