During the Fall 2017 semester, the ASC supported over 1,695 students in the diverse
areas of tutoring available.
Even with lower enrollment numbers, student tutoring contacts increased by over 47%.
Student visits to the Tutoring Center increased by more than 38% as they continue
to utilize the TutorTrac online appointment software.
Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics are the most frequently requested subjects for
tutoring (84%), followed closely by Accounting and Biology.
Tutoring support was provided to over 32 campus partners in the Fall semester.
Faculty-referred tutors were available in Classroom, Workshop and Flex scheduling
areas.
A survey attached to the TutorTrac checkout system was utilized in the Fall semester.
Ninety-nine percent of students responded that their tutoring session either met or
exceeded their expectations.
Over 60% of all students served by tutors are freshmen and sophomores.
The Academic Support Center is centrally located in the Arts & Science Commons between
the Starr and Science buildings.
Structured Learning Assistance Academic Year 2017-2018
SLA was developed at Ferris in 1993 and has grown from 1 course to 20 courses in the
2017-2018 academic year.
In the 2017-2018 academic year there were 64 sections of SLA that were available for
student registration.
Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology are the top three SLA-supported subjects (77%).
SLA served over 1,571 students in the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 semesters. Eighty-nine
percent (89%) of students surveyed in the Fall semester stated that they felt that
their grade was ½ to 1 full letter grade higher due to participating in SLA.
There were 22 faculty members in the Fall 2017 semester and 14 faculty members in
the Spring 2018 semester that participated in SLA.
There were 28 facilitators that were hired in the Fall 2017 semester. Of these 15
were first-time facilitators. In Spring 2018, seventeen facilitators were hired and
of these, 3 were first-time facilitators. The remainder of the facilitators were returning
from the Fall semester.
MATH 109 was a new SLA course in the Fall 2017 semester, as was MATH 114 in the Spring
2018 semester.
