Message to Students

Good morning Bulldogs!

Fall (December 2020) Commencement 

As a result of the continued restrictions on large gatherings due to COVID-19 and the risk of spread at large indoor events, we will not be able to host an in-person Commencement nor the make-up ceremony for Spring 2020 graduates in Wink Arena on the Big Rapids campus. 

While this news is disappointing, the health and safety of everyone who would be attending is most important. We will commemorate the achievements of our graduates through a Virtual Commencement at 10 AM and 1:30 PM on December 19, 2020.  Each graduate will have a personalized slide with our Ferris logo and colors displaying their name, degree, photo, and a short quote or thank you message.  The event will include musical selections and recorded messages from the Board of Trustees, President, Provost, Deans, and Alumni. 

More information on ordering caps and gowns and how to pick up your diploma covers and alumni pins in November will be shared in future emails and on the Commencement Webpage

Join Us for Conversations That Matter

There is a lot happening in our culture/world today, and we want to hear from you. You are invited to join University leaders for the inaugural virtual listening session on Conversations That Matter on Tuesday, September 29, from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Join us and share your mind and voice on this important conversation. Please register in advance for this meeting. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Directed to Isolate or Quarantine? Communicate With Your Faculty

When directed to isolate or quarantine, please continue to participate in your fully online courses if you are feeling well enough.  If you do not have access to a computer while in isolation/quarantine, please email [email protected] for assistance.  

If you have in-person classes and/or you are not feeling well enough to participate in your classes remotely, please email your faculty to discuss your options.  Here is a sample email you may wish to use:

Dear Professor [name]

I am currently enrolled in [class]. Unfortunately, I have been directed to quarantine or isolate until at least [enter date]. Please know that I am committed to doing everything I can do in order to stay current with my coursework during this period.

With that in mind, I would deeply appreciate your help in working with me to make a plan that will allow me to participate remotely from isolation/quarantine and/or to make-up any face-to-face class time and work that I will miss.

I look forward to hearing back from you soon and can be reached by either a response to this email, or by phone at [enter number].


Free Tutoring Services are Available!

Tutoring, writing consultation, and other academic support is available through the Center for Academic Literacies. Walk-in tutoring and academic support is available, but online appointments are available as well.

Online tutoring appointments can be made through Tutor Trac, online, by phone, or in person. Follow the instructions in this guide to make an appointment.  For more information about tutoring and information on our Student Success Series, visit our tutoring webpage.

The Writing Center will operate remotely and is available online only during the Fall 2020 semester. For more information please visit the Writing Center webpage.

Please take a moment to review your local address and cell phone number in MyFSU using the link “Verify/Update Address” which can be found in the MyRecords channel for Students. From the main MyFSU page click on Student, then click on the MyRecords icon, and click on the Verify/Update Addresses in the left hand column. Select “Local” to update your local address and “Cell Phone” to provide the most up-to-date mobile number

The process is simple and takes less than five minutes. We will enter all students who update their information this week into a drawing for a $250 scholarship!
