Message to Faculty and Staff

November 30, 2021

Good morning,

If you have not been vaccinated yet for COVID-19, it’s not too late! Faculty, staff and students can still schedule their first round of the Pfizer vaccine series at Birkam Health Center by calling (231) 591-2614, Option 2. Or, vaccines are still widely available at many pharmacies across the state. You can find a vaccine site near you by visiting vaccines.gov.  If you are able, please take advantage of the opportunity these vaccines provide to lessen the severity of the disease and keep yourself, your colleagues and your family safe.

Booster Shots at Birkam

The Ferris community can also get a COVID-19 Pfizer booster shot at Birkam. You must be a Ferris State University employee (students are also eligible), 18 years old or older and fully vaccinated (two doses of Pfizer or Moderna, one dose of Johnson & Johnson). If you received the Pfizer or Moderna series as your first round of vaccination, it must be at least six months since completing your last series. If you received Johnson & Johnson as your first round of vaccination, it must be at least two months since completing your series. Call (231) 591-2614, Option 2, to set up an appointment.

I Tested Positive for COVID-19...What Do I Do?

If you test positive for COVID-19, please be sure to report your status in the “Report a Positive Test Result” portal. When you do this, it will alert Human Resources and Birkam Health Center to reach out to you to begin the process of contact tracing. Birkam’s COVID-19 case manager will contact you to ensure that you have all the resources available to you while you isolate and to identify any close contacts (those who were within 6 feet for 15 minutes cumulatively over 24 hours).

Domestic/International Travel Reminder

With the emergence of the new Omicron variant of the virus that causes COVID-19, it is advisable to check the CDC’s travel website for updates and other important destination information before you travel domestically or internationally.

COVID-19 Testing

Through mid-December the District Health Department #10 is hosting “Park and Test” COVID-19 testing clinics at 14485 Northland Drive in Big Rapids on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The testing is free and available for those who are symptomatic and asymptomatic (without symptoms). You can pre-register for a test online. If this location is not convenient, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has a Test Finder on their website to help you locate places throughout Michigan where you can get a free COVID-19 test.

On the Big Rapids campus, asymptomatic COVID-19 testing remains available for faculty, staff and students at the Pharmacy Care Clinic on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 4:45 p.m., and Wednesdays from 12 to 1:45 p.m. You can “Schedule an Asymptomatic COVID-19 Test" right from the Coronavirus Updates Hub webpage. Or, testing is also available at Birkam Health Center Monday through Friday by appointment. Please call (231) 591-2614, Option 2, if you would like to schedule an appointment.

Thank you for continuing to use the tools and resources available to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 on campus. This includes:

  • Completing the daily symptom checker before coming to a campus location
  • Reporting COVID-19 signs/symptoms in the symptom checker
  • Staying home when you are feeling ill
  • Reporting a positive test result for COVID-19
  • Wearing a face covering indoors over the mouth and nose, regardless of vaccination status
  • Engaging in good hygiene practices including frequent and thorough hand washing

As always, we will continue to provide updated COVID-19 information via email and on the Coronavirus Updates Hub. Thank you for staying informed.
