Message to Faculty and Staff

Sept. 20, 2021

Good afternoon,

The Re-entry Committee has several new updates to share with you.

Status of OSHA Vaccine Mandate

Earlier this month, President Biden announced that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) soon would require all private employers with more than 100 employees to require workers to become vaccinated or submit to weekly COVID-19 tests. This is expected to affect colleges and universities as well; however, the details are unclear at this time.

The OSHA Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) is expected to be released soon, possibly this week. The Re-entry Committee is watching this closely and will keep the University community updated as developments arise.

COVID-19 Vaccines Still Available

We continue to strongly encourage all faculty and staff to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. If you have not been vaccinated and would like to be, please contact Birkam Health Center at x2614, Option 2, to set up an appointment. Or, you can visit www.vaccines.gov for area vaccination sites across the state.

Once you are fully vaccinated, please document your “Fully Vaccinated for COVID-19 Documentation” status in the symptom checker. The form is located directly under “COVID-19 Daily Check-in for Employees.”

Class Attendance Policies

Thank you for continuing to help our students when they are directed to quarantine or isolate due to COVID-19 and for being flexible with your attendance policies. It has been great to see the extra level of care and concern shown to our students.

COVID-19 Dashboard

Everyone in our campus community has worked really hard to get us where we are today and the majority are following the established health and safety protocols. We are managing the COVID-19 cases on our campus very well, with the COVID-19 Dashboard showing five new cases as of Friday, Sept. 17, with 20 active cases associated with the University. This includes not only the Big Rapids campus but our statewide locations as well. Kendall College of Art and Design reports no new cases, with three active cases. The dashboard is updated daily, with Saturday and Sunday numbers reported Monday afternoon.

COVID-19 Testing/Wastewater Testing

Asymptomatic COVID-19 testing (for those who have NO symptoms) is currently available for faculty, staff and students at the Pharmacy Care Clinic on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 3-4:30 p.m., and Wednesdays from 12-1:30 p.m. You can “Schedule an Asymptomatic COVID-19 Test” right from the Coronavirus Updates Hub webpage. Or, testing is also available at Birkam Health Center Monday through Friday by appointment. Please call x2614, Option 2, if you would like to schedule an appointment.

Any faculty or staff experiencing COVID-19 symptoms (symptomatic) should contact their healthcare provider for testing and treatment options. Spectrum Health currently offers COVID-19 screening and testing. More information can be found on Spectrum Health’s website. You can also visit www.doineedacovid19test.com to find a drive-thru pharmacy test site near you. Or, you can call the COVID-19 Hotline at 888-535-6136, and press 2 for help finding a test site, or search online for a testing site near you.

Wastewater testing continues on campus, in the city of Big Rapids, and in additional locations across the state. A team of CASE faculty and students perform the analysis on the wastewater samples each week. If there is a high level of COVID seen in the wastewater in our campus housing or student apartment complexes in Big Rapids, those areas are alerted and strongly encouraged to be tested.

As we move through the semester, please continue to help keep our campus safe and healthy by doing the following:

  • Complete the daily symptom checker before coming to a campus location
  • Report COVID-19 signs/symptoms in the symptom checker
  • Stay home when you are feeling ill
  • Report a positive test result for COVID-19
  • Wear a face covering indoors, regardless of vaccination status
  • Engage in good hygiene practices including frequent and thorough hand washing

Please stay tuned, as we will continue to provide information via email and on the Coronavirus Updates Hub webpage. As always, you can reach the Committee at [email protected]. Thank you for staying informed and keeping our campus community healthy and safe.
