Message to Faculty and Staff

Aug. 11, 2021

Yesterday, Mecosta County moved from a “moderate” level of COVID-19 community transmission to “substantial” in the CDC’s COVID-19 Data Tracker. To maximize protection from COVID-19 and the Delta variant, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone, regardless of vaccination status, should wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of “substantial” or “high” transmission.

With this new development, the University will follow the recommendation of the CDC and require that a mask that covers the mouth and nose be worn indoors in all buildings on the Big Rapids campus effective August 12, 2021. This applies to all faculty, staff, students and visitors, regardless of vaccination status. As a reminder, if you are in your office, and your door is open, or your office is in an open area, you must wear your mask. If you are able to close your office door, you may remove your mask. Faculty and staff can request a mask accommodation by emailing Human Resources.

Masks can be requested through the Physical Plant – Plant Stores operation by key building custodians using the AiM system. New signs informing everyone of this change will be added to building entrances soon.

Please continue to complete the daily symptom checker before coming to campus, stay home if you are not feeling well, and wash your hands frequently (or use hand sanitizer) to help mitigate the risk of spreading COVID-19. And if you haven’t been vaccinated yet, we strongly encourage you to do so by contacting your healthcare provider or the Birkam Health Center at x2614, Option 2.

We look forward to welcoming students back to campus for the start of the fall semester and working together as a community to ensure our campuses remain healthy and safe living, learning and working environments. Thank you for your willingness to mask up and be a part of the solution to keep our campuses safe.
