Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.
Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:
Kamryn McKay
She is: a junior in the Hospitality Management program from Novi, who will complete a concentration in Lodging. Kamyrn’s internship was with Level One Bank.
About her Internship: “I am learning a lot in this internship, as part of what has been a crazy summer for me. I was supposed to do my internship at a South Carolina hotel, but they had to cancel. I ended up at Level One bank, and it has been the best experience. At the beginning of my internship, the bank was in the process of doing PPP (paycheck protection program) loans for small businesses, so I was a part of that.”
How Ferris was Involved in her Internship: “The university originally was very involved with helping me find the internship I was supposed to have. However, because of COVID-19, I had to turn to something else. Thankfully, they were able to approve my new internship, and I have been able to fulfill my requirements.”
Advice for other Students Seeking Internships: “If you have the chance to do an internship, do it. Even if it is something that does not quite match up with your major. From this experience, I have found that taking a risk and doing something I wasn’t sure I would be able to do has built up my confidence and made me a better worker.”
Ferris Core Value Kamryn Relates to: Learning. “I think that we can all learn something from anything we do. This internship
has definitely taught me to be open to learning new things and not to be scared to
fail.”
