Summer Internships: Grant Joslin

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Ferris State University

He is: a fifth-year student from Hastings in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program. His internship is with Poxis Integration in Britton, Michigan, between Ann Arbor and Adrian.

About His Internship: “I learn how to be a leader, to manage projects to their end, and to have responsibility for items and projects here at the facility. More specifically, I program welding robots for production and keep track of the quality assurance reporting.”

How Ferris was Instrumental in Grant’s Internships: “I was able to get these internships due to the career fair that Ferris holds twice a year. I met the company there, received an offer, and I have stayed with them since, so for me, it has been effective. Last year, I interned with this same company, but at a different facility.”

Future Plans: “I hope that I can use the skills from my internships and apply them to real-world career opportunities, in hopes to better myself professionally and be as good as I can be as an engineer.”

Advice for Other Students Seeking Internships: “Do not be afraid to call and ask or speak to someone, people are busy and sometimes you need to put yourself in their path to be noticed.”

On the Impact of Ferris Core Values on Grant’s Studies and Work: “I believe that Opportunity, Learning, Ethical Community, Diversity, Collaboration and Excellence are all very important to becoming a well-rounded professional, and the more you can adopt these core values into your daily habits and work life, the more likely you are to succeed.”
