Summer Internships: Marcus Payne

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in internships this summer. Meet:

Marcus PayneMarcus Payne

He is: a senior from Detroit in the Television and Digital Media Production program.

His Internship: is with Coastline Studios, a production house in Grand Rapids. “I am learning how to edit and group really big and extravagant wedding footage. I am learning all the detail and planning that comes along with these weddings and how to multi-cam edit. I am making a difference by becoming an asset to the team and editing together the best footage that’s available for the main editor.”

Was Ferris Helpful in Securing your Internship? “Ferris senior sequence program, part of the TDMP major was great with helping the seniors secure an internship with a stable company with multiple possible options to apply to.”

Future Plans: “My plans are to become a film director/producer and give back to my community (eastside Detroit) by capturing their stories and making them into real films.”

Advice for other Students Seeking Internships: “Don’t panic. There are many opportunities out there. You have to apply yourself. Hard work does not go unseen. This is my first internship, and I love the experience of being in an actual workplace, working along with professionals and learning new workflows.”

Ferris Core Value Marcus Relates to: Opportunity. “Based on my experience growing up in a challenging urban area, opportunities like this are very rare. That’s why I work so hard because I’m just thankful and blessed that I have made it this far and can soon start a successful career.”
