Hard work paid off for Ferris State University’s American Marketing Association chapter, as it was designated a “Top 10 Chapter” at the AMA International Collegiate Conference, held April 11-13 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Marketing professor Donna Green is the lead advisor to the AMA Ferris chapter, and as case team coach, was among those accompanying students to the ICC. Green said the team honor and individual accolades were the results of thousands of hours of involvement by the chapter’s members, 14 of whom attended the event in New Orleans.

“Our chapter is comprised of students who are earning degrees in 14 different majors,” Green said. “Members of the executive board take on immense responsibilities, so that chapter meetings are well organized, strategic plans are created and the trip to the ICC is planned out in every detail. The AMA Ferris chapter actively collaborates with students in the College of Business, whether they are members, or not. Three hundred events were offered during this academic year, 60 of which were professional development opportunities for students to prepare themselves for successful careers.”

The “Top 10” designation signifies that the university’s representatives were selected from a field of 388 schools. Ferris’ chapter was also honored for hosting an AMA regional conference, and earned semifinalist status in the case competition, which included a 40-page case analysis, marketing strategy and promotional plan for The Wall Street Journal. Green said collaboration by chapter members was a key consideration in their second-place finish for their exhibit booth presentation at the ICC, and a fourth-place award earned for their SABRE (Strategic Allocation of Business Resources) Business Simulation.

Chapter members receiving individual awards at the ICC included:

  • Keegan Brown, of Kalamazoo, who finished second in the Perfect Pitch competition and third in the Sales competition,
  • Lucy Reigle, of Fenton, who earned a fifth-place in the Perfect Pitch competition and
  • Zachary Ineson, of Buffalo, New York, who was fifth in the University Sales Center Alliance Sales Student of the Year category.

Green added that AMA Ferris members are active in community service endeavors such as the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway program, their locally developed Adopt-A-Campus clean-up effort and holding donation drives to support area food pantries.
