Summer Internships: Mary Lawson

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Mary LawsonMary Lawson, of Plainwell, a senior in Ferris State University's Heavy Equipment Service Engineering Technology program, in the College of Engineering Technology, is an intern with AIS Construction Equipment's Training Center in Lansing.

She is: a senior from Plainwell, in the College of Engineering Technology Heavy Equipment Service Engineering Technology program.

Her Internship: Mary is working with staff at the AIS Training Center in Lansing. She said, “This is my fourth year with AIS, the last three were at their construction equipment sales, parts and service location in Grand Rapids.”

What Mary Is Learning In Her Internship: “I am learning how to teach a high school equipment operation and construction class, to perform the tasks of a fleet dispatch officer, to open and close work orders, and how to use the triage program. I believe I am making a difference by learning to teach young minds, while I gain new skills to improve my understanding of the industry.”

How Ferris Has Helped Her with Internships: “I believe my HESET courses have prepared me well for each opportunity that I have had by spending my summers in the industry.”

Advice For Students Seeking Internships: “It may sound simple, but never stop learning. I have been exposed to many jobs and professional responsibilities, thanks to my coursework and advancing my efforts with AIS.”

Future Plans: “I plan on experiencing all the job opportunities the industry has to offer, then intend to continue my career as a technician for AIS Construction Equipment.”
