Summer Internships: Sidney Sabo

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in internships this summer. Meet:

Sidney SaboSidney Sabo

He is:a senior from Grand Haven studying Television and Digital Media Production. Sidney is interning at Fission3 in Grand Rapids.

What Sidney is Learning/How He Is Making A Difference: “On my internship, I am primarily working with After Effects. It is industry-standard software for creating motion graphics animation. I am further improving upon the proficiencies I have gained from my own studies as well as TDMP courses and learning how to fit into a professional, client-oriented workflow. It is a lot of fun.”

How Was Ferris Involved in This Internship:“Fission3’s owner, Derek Rottman, is a graduate of Ferris’ TDMP program. So, really Ferris had everything to do with the creation of this internship. The internship has gone to TDMP students just about every year as a part of the department’s official site list. TDMP’s Senior Sequence has an entire class devoted to securing an internship, and the resume and demo reel I created there helped me stand out.”

Sidney’s Future Plans:“The goal is to land a job as a junior motion designer at a company doing internal work or at a production house doing work for their clients. A few other positions interest me, though, like digital imaging technician and assistant editor. It is an extremely competitive field, so I will be thankful for any job I can find. This internship will give me an edge, as I will have experience with client work.”

Other Duties on Campus: “I was in MCA, the Media Communications Association, which is the registered student organization for the TDMP program. I was also a videographer/editor for the Torch and a shooter for Ferris Athletics until my senior semester.”

Ferris Core Value Sidney Relates to:Excellence. “I have always poured everything I have into every project I was given. I had a vision that I was going to execute it with as few compromises as possible. I have worked 100+ hour weeks and pulled dozens of all-nighters to that end. I know that is what it takes to make it in a competitive field like media production because if you are not committed to excellence, many other hopefuls are. More importantly, though, I would be disappointed in myself if I knew I had not given it my all.”
