Summer Internships: Amanda Roehl

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in internships this summer. Meet:

Amanda RoehlAmanda Roehl

She is: a senior from Shelby Township, in Macomb County, preparing to graduate from the College of Business with a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations.

Her Internship/Making A Difference: involves serving as a communications intern with Kids’ Food Basket, a regional nonprofit in Grand Rapids. “I have filmed and edited videos and taken up some other communication roles. This internship has helped me advance my skills with social media, become more creative with technology and required me to learn new software. I believe I have made a difference by developing videos that will help employees recruit interns, along with ‘how-to’ videos for volunteers.”

Was Ferris Involved In Securing Your Internship? “A number of Ferris alumni work for KFB, one of them comes to our classes or Public Relations Student Society of America meetings each semester to speak. I learned that they had an internship opening and responded.”

Advice For Other Students Seeking Internships: “Be confident when you are in your interview process. I have found that such an attitude resonates with potential employers.”

Other Activities On Campus: “I have worked on the University Advancement and Marketing Student Social Team. I was the Bid Day Chair for the Alpha Xi Delta sorority and served as vice president of Administration and Finance for the PRSSA chapter.”

Ferris Core Value Amanda Relates to: Opportunity. “The university provides many avenues to find the opportunity that suits a student best. Then, it is up to you to make the most of what has been provided.”
