Title IX Office to Host Poetry Slam Event Dedicated to Survivors of Sexual Assault

Ferris State University’s Title IX Office will be hosting a Poetry Slam on Monday, Feb. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the University Center’s Rankin Atrium.

The Poetry Slam is a dedication to survivors of sexual assault and the healing process. Volunteers can choose to read and/or write poetry. The event is open to the public. In attendance will be advocates from Women’s Information Service, Inc., in support of anyone who may need someone to talk to during the event.

“We want this event to empower survivors by giving them a voice and a platform to speak out,” said Harley Harrison, a student assistant in the Title IX office and a senior in Technical and Professional Communication and Spanish for the Professions. “Healing isn’t linear and survivors need to know they aren’t alone in this process. So, we thought a great way to illustrate this process would be to share poems and support each other.”

The Poetry Slam is a non-competitive event hosted by Campus Needs You, a social media account managed by students in the Title IX Office, and MC Rich Bronson. Content warnings are emphasized for survivors and youth who may be in attendance.
