Fallen Officer Memorial Run April 15 to Benefit Nagle-Wilson Memorial Scholarship

Jessica Nagle-Wilson

A commemorative event organized by a Ferris State University professional fraternity will be held in Big Rapids’ Northend Riverside Park on Sunday, April 15, with the members of Lambda Alpha Epsilon set to host the Fallen Officer Memorial Run.

Proceeds from the $20 registration fee will support the Jessica Nagle-Wilson Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded annually to a senior in Ferris’ School of Criminal Justice. Nagle-Wilson was a 2000 graduate of the CJ program, who fell while on duty with the Hazel Park Police Department in July 2002. Recipients of this award must have a demonstrated financial need and present a grade-point average of 3.2, or higher.

LAE Philathropy Chair Landry Shorkey, a sophomore from Bay City, said the fraternity is encouraged by the support it has received from Big Rapids-area businesses to support the development of the event.

“Their donations allow us to offer gift certificates to winners of the race and support the Nagle-Wilson Memorial Scholarship,” Shorkey said. “We will have awards for the first three participants finishing both the run and the walk and all who complete the event will receive a commemorative keychain.”

LAE representatives will be at the park beginning at 11:30 a.m. on April 15, to register participants and sell Fallen Officer Memorial Run shirts for $10 apiece. A memorial service to remember fallen law enforcement officers will begin at 1 p.m., with the 5K run/walk to follow. In the event of inclement weather, organizers have scheduled a contingent rain date of Sunday, April 22.

“We are glad that a number of students and others from the community have registered to take part,” Shorkey said. “We welcome participants of all ages who would like to sign up on the day of the event.”
