Summer Internships: Kenzi Szymanski

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Ferris State UniversityKenzi Szymanski

She is: in her sophomore year as a Music Industry Management major, Kenzi is from Hudsonville, Michigan.

Her Internship: Kenzi was part of a crew with GCS Audio, a production company based in Warren, Michigan. “I learned about the operations of sound and what happens on stage prior to, and during a music festival. I learned how to set up the sound equipment, set up for musical acts, and how to tear down once the festival was over with. I also learned a little bit about mixing and about specific sound equipment.”

Future Plans: Kenzi determined, by participating in this internship, that she will continue to examine the industry for her career prospects. ”This internship has helped me narrow down the list of careers, where I have interests. I realized that the audio and music festival field is not for me, and I’m not sure how long it would have taken me to realize that about myself, if I had not experienced this internship. I think it’s important that this happened earlier on, so that I am clearer with myself on what I do and do not see myself doing in my career.”

Advice for Other Students Seeking Internships: Kenzi suggests researching the opportunities that are available. “Make sure you have a very strong interest in what you are applying for, don’t just apply for the first internship that pops up which is related to your field. Ask questions and figure out what you will be getting yourself into, then decide if that is where you could possibly see yourself one day. You want to be able to learn as much as you can from the internship, and enjoy it, for sure.”

Personal Insights Kenzi Gained in This Process: She found value in the end result of participating in her internship. “I believe that I made a difference in my own life, by putting myself out there and getting an internship. It has helped me to learn more about what my interests are in the music industry and this made me think more about what fields of the industry are more to my liking.”
