Ferris State University’s Center for Leadership, Activities and Career Services reminds
students that the Spring Semester Career Week is scheduled from Monday, Feb. 1 through
Friday, Feb. 5.
CLACS Career and Volunteer Center Coordinator Michele Albright said that career preparation is the focus of the Backpack to Briefcase Workshop, Monday, Feb. 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. in University Center, Room 202. Bill Van Steenis, author of “In Demand: How to Get Hired, Develop Your Career and Always be Successful,” will participate, along with faculty members, university staff and prospective employers, as a resume blitz and speed interviewing sessions are part of the event’s schedule.
“The students can ask anything they want to that is career-oriented,” Albright said. “There will be contests for the best-dressed student, best resume, and best interview. Students can come and take part anytime in those four hours.”
Albright said that they are stressing the importance of professional dress at Career Week events following the workshop, so they will offer an impromptu fashion show, with attire coming from the First Lady’s Attic.
“President Eisler’s wife, Patsy, never wanted students to lose out on a great opportunity, because they didn't have the financial resources to purchase proper interview attire,” Albright said about the founding of the First Lady’s Attic.
The First Lady’s Attic is located behind the CLACS office, and Albright said that while they will not be strict on dress code for Monday’s workshop, a best-dressed contest should serve as motivation for students to dress for success.
On Tuesday, Feb. 2, and Wednesday, Feb. 3, the Career Center will be open each day for walk-in assistance from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. CLACS staff will be available to offer personal support to students interested in making a good impression with potential employers or businesses offering internships.
“They’ll have an opportunity to preview the Career Fair employers, and we’ll give them a tour of the First Lady’s Attic,” Albright said. “They can also receive on-the-spot resume reviews.”
All participants in Career Week are required to attend the Career and Internship Fair, which will be held in the Ewigleben Sports Complex, Thursday, Feb. 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Albright said the fair will be a “last-minute opportunity for students to address details” before they participate in their interviews.
“They’ll be able to learn about different application processes, get a check of the materials that they’ll offer to potential employers,” Albright said. “It’s all intended to help them be more comfortable with the process.”
Albright said they have more than 210 companies who will participate in the Career and Internship Fair, including “long-standing participants, IT companies, leaders in the healthcare and service industries, along with sales and marketing firms.” Employer interviews will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, February 4 and Friday, Feb. 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“80 percent of the companies participating in the Career and Internship Fair have requested space for interviews, that’s a real positive for our students,” Albright said. “There will be a broad spectrum of opportunities.”
The CLACS website will provide an updated listing of employers taking part in Career Week, and maps to confirm their locations in Wink Arena, and the Multipurpose Room of the Ewigleben Sports Complex.
