*SEE MARCH 5, 2016 UPDATE TO THIS STATEMENT*

Tuesday evening, Feb. 23 at approximately 7 p.m., a female Ferris State University student was walking in the area of State and South streets, on campus, when she was approached by an unknown white male in his early 20s. The male was wearing a black hoodie and black sweatpants. He is approximately 6-foot to 6-foot-2-inches tall.

The male grabbed the arm of the female student and would not let go. Several other people were in the area and told him to let the female go. He released the female. The female student is unharmed and safe. The suspect is unknown and not in police custody.

The Ferris State University Department of Public Safety has asked that any person with information regarding this assault call DPS dispatch at (231) 591-5000. Ferris DPS would like to talk with the witnesses of this incident. Information can also be forwarded using the text system: [email protected]. The DPS Campus Crime Hotline can also be contacted at [email protected].

As a reminder, students on campus at night can request an escort by DPS student foot patrollers, if available.

People traveling on or near campus are asked to be alert. DPS recommends that students travel with at least one other person at night on campus. If this is not possible, students are asked to contact a trustworthy person when leaving a building to travel on foot, give that person your destination and your expected time of arrival.
