Examples of Reasonable Accommodations

  • Extended Testing Time — Students who qualify for this service are allowed 150% of the time normally allowed. This can be offered either at the Disabilities Services testing room or other alternatives as agreed upon by instructor and student.
  • Quiet Room for Exams — Distraction free environment to take tests/quizzes.
  • Interpreters — Certified interpreters hired through Disabilities Services may be used in the classroom setting.
  • Note-taker — Hired and trained through Disabilities Services, though faculty are asked to make announcement in class for those interested. Carbonless paper is provided for students to make duplicate copies of class notes. If student with disability is not present for class, note-taker does not provide notes for that day.
  • Assistive Listening Device — Device that amplifies the instructors voice through use of a microphone attached to instructor and a receiver the student wears.
  • Scribes for Tests — Arranged by Disabilities Services and assists in writing answers for tests. The Scribe does not make any comments regarding the answers the student gives.
  • Calculator for Exams — Students that qualify may use calculators on exams only as appropriate as determined by instructor.
  • E-text — Some students may require textbooks in an alternate format. This may take several weeks to obtain. E-text allows student to manipulate text. This may include enlarging text or using in combination with Kurzweil.
  • Kurzweil 3000 — Text to speech software allowing student to listen to the text.
  • Use of Tape Player or Recorder — Some students may benefit from recording a lecture and listening later. These students will sign a contract stating that they will only use the tape for their own academic purposes.
  • Classroom Accommodations — This may include preferred seating (usually front-row for impaired vision), table in place of desk, stool in labs, etc.
  • Word-Processor for Essay Exams — This may be needed for a variety of medical reasons. It may or may not include spellchecker.
  • Requests Related to Absences — consideration for attendance and tardies may be requested but not enforced.
