Architecture and Facility Management Program Objectives

The mission of the Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Sustainability degree program is to prepare students for innovative practice in the design professions and stewardship of their communities. The program seeks to provide a holistic, quality education in architecture; to promote excellence in architectural practice, sustainability, and preservation; and demonstrate engagement with community planning. The program also seeks to instill the value of life-long learning.

There are two primary objectives of the BS in Architecture and Sustainability program:

  1. To prepare graduates for employment in the architectural profession at career-entry levels;
  2. To prepare graduates to continue their education in a NAAB accredited Master of Architecture program, leading to licensure as an architect.

To this end, students who complete the program will possess the ability to:

  • Produce professional-quality graphic presentations and technical documents
  • Conduct independent and directed research to gather information about architectural and community planning problems
  • Develop fundamental design concepts
  • Demonstrate collaborative skills and synthesis thinking
  • Practice responsible approaches to environmental conservation
  • Demonstrate knowledge of building materials and assemblies
  • Demonstrate an understanding of structural systems
  • Demonstrate an understanding of building environmental and control systems
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the technology and aesthetics of building envelope systems
  • Integrate building codes and systems, including HVACR, electrical, life-safety, communication, and acoustics, into comprehensive architectural solutions

Traditionally, 50% of a graduating class seeks and finds employment within architecture or engineering firms. The other 50% continue their education and transfer to Master of Architecture programs at other universities: a sampling include:

  • Ball State University
  • Boston Architectural College
  • Clemson University
  • Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (Grand Rapids)
  • Illinois Institute of Technology
