Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration that it is the leading cause of blindness for those aged 55 and older in the United States, affecting more than 10 million Americans and is currently incurable. Macular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the central portion of the retina or the macula. The macula is responsible for the central vision we use on a daily basis to read, drive a car, watch television, recognize faces or colors, and work. Approximately 1.8 million Americans age 40 and older have advanced AMD, and another 7.3 million people with intermediate AMD are at substantial risk for vision loss. The government estimates that by 2020 there will be 2.9 million people with advanced AMD, and by 2030 the number could increase to 6.3 million due to the aging of the Baby Boomers.
