As the Dean of the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS), it is an honor to welcome you to our College. Our College is home to the School of Education, the School of Criminal Justice and the School of Digital Media. Within our College we offer educational certificates, Associate, Bachelor, and Master Degrees in the fields of education, criminal justice, television and digital media production (TDMP), digital animation and game design, and digital media software engineering.
Below is a brief overview of the various schools in the COEHS:
The School of Education offers traditional teacher education programs with a broad range of career options. We offer associate degree programs such as Early Childhood, which focuses upon supporting the learning and development of young children. Another popular program is Elementary Education (ELED). ELED is a bachelor's program which prepares graduates for career settings in teaching, program administration, as well as child/family advocates. The School of Education also offers several Graduate Programs, and State Teaching Certification. Our school is built upon a faculty who have spent their lives teaching education which allows them to bring a wealth of knowledge, research, and experience to each program.
The School of Digital Media is made up of three unique programs -- Television and Digital Media Production, Digital Animation and Game Design, as well as Digital Media Software Engineering. The Television and Digital Media Production program is located on our main campus and is geared toward students seeking a career in television production. Students in this program are introduced to our state-of-the-art, high definition studio that allows the program to replicate live studio work. The students in this program are exposed to real-world experiences through video production and hands-on training that prepares them for the media industry. This experience provides our students with a progressive skill set that have led to internships with The Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and ESPN. The Digital Animation and Game Design (DAGD) and Digital Media Software Engineering (DMSE) programs are both located on our Grand Rapids campus. Both programs enjoy a fabulous reputation, with recent reviews from entities like The Princeton Review, naming our DAGD program one of the top 25 programs in the United States. The success of both programs has provided students opportunities for employment in outstanding media outlets throughout the United States.
The School of Criminal Justice, one of the largest programs on campus, is the premier criminal justice program in the State and Region. We offer three separate degrees which consist of Law Enforcement, Corrections, and Generalist. These options allow our students to engage in the criminal justice industry in a variety of ways. For example, our graduates have found careers in Federal, State, local and regional law enforcement, non-profit organizations as Program Coordinators, juvenile justice professionals, and correctional professionals. The School of Criminal Justice also incorporated an on-campus police academy, which is offered to students upon entering their senior year. Students from the School of Criminal Justice have enjoyed internships with federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the US Marshals. Additionally, students have interned with numerous corrections and probation agencies throughout the state. Ferris' Criminal Justice program is in its fifth decade and continues to be a prominent educator for future criminal justice professionals.
The mission of our College is to “graduate students who will secure careers as knowledgeable, participatory and collaborative professionals; who adapt to, serve, and participate meaningfully in a diverse and rapidly changing State, nation, and world; and who model life-long learning and integrity in their professions, their communities, and their lives.” With that in mind we want to ensure that as a student enrolled in our College, your educational journey with us is an excellent one. We have excellent faculty, staff, and student leaders that are here to assist you with that experience and we look forward to your educational and career success.
Once again, it is an honor to have you as a life-long learner in our College and we look forward to serving your educational needs. Please let us know how we can better serve you.
Dr. Arrick Jackson, Dean
