Excellence in Course Assessment Award 2018

Kali VanLangen

Kali VanLangenKali VanLangen, Associate Professor in the College of Pharmacy, has been chosen as the recipient of the 2018 Excellence in Course Assessment Individual Award. This award is given each year to one team and one individual who demonstrate excellence in the use of assessment data in a course to improve student learning.

“Her approach to revising PHAR 589 Integrated Case Studies is an exemplary model of thoughtful instructional design and reflective practice,” writes Roberta Teahen, Associate Provost, for the Excellence in Course Assessment committee.

“When students were not performing as desired in some parts of the Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE), she sought to understand why through a methodical approach to analyzing the situation,” Teahen continued. VanLangen “engaged other faculty, reviewed expected outcomes, considered where the skills deemed missing had previously been practiced, and more. Her approach and her use of the data to inform her activities were exemplary.”

VanLangen is the Course Coordinator for PHAR 589 Integrated Case Studies (ICS), a role she has held since 2012. She is also the OSCE coordinator for Practice Skills Lab 5. In the College of Pharmacy, she serves on the Accreditation and Assessment committee and the Pharmacy Education Development and Lecture Series committee. Her service outside of Ferris includes co-chairing the membership committee, a joint committee between the Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA) and the Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP).

In addition to her work at Ferris, VanLangen maintains an active practice at Mercy Health Saint Mary's in Grand Rapids where she is a preceptor for fourth year pharmacy students on their Acute Inpatient Medicine Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE).

VanLangen earned a PharmD and an Associate’s degree from Ferris State University and she is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS).

VanLangen and other recipients of the 2018 Academic Affairs Awards were recognized on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at the Employee Service Awards in the David L. Eisler Center.
