Ferris State University’s vision is to be “the preferred choice for students who seek specialized, innovating, career and life-enhancing education.” This vision supports the University’s mission to “prepare students for successful careers, responsible citizenship, and lifelong learning.” One means by which the vision and mission are achieved is by providing students access to a wide range of educational opportunities, including online learning. In so doing, the University is committed to online learning environments and experiences that provide “a stimulating, student-centered academic environment that fosters life-long engagement, leadership, citizenship, and continuing intellectual development.”
In 2016, the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) began an initiative to increase by 10 percent the number of online courses offered within the college. To provide support to this initiative, the College established the COEHS Online Advisory Committee to help ensure that each online course offered through the College would provide students with a quality educational experience. The Committee formed a set of procedures for providing guidance and support to faculty, including a rubric that indicates effective practices in online course design and delivery, and addresses a variety of areas including teaching methods, assessment, and accessibility.
The College of Education and Human Services Online Advisory Committee (COEHS OAC) will implement systematic procedures, based on a comprehensive rubric, to provide guidance and feedback to faculty who are participating in this online course development initiative.
The committee will be comprised of faculty (tenured and non-tenured) from each school within the College of Education and Human Services, as well as a representative from the Office of Extended and International Operations. At the request of Committee members or the Dean of COEHS, members may also include representatives from the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning, the University Curriculum Committee, or other units or programs.
- To assist in developing and maintaining quality standards for online course design and delivery in the College of Education and Human Services
- To provide guidance and feedback to faculty who are participating in the initiative. This feedback will be based on a rubric.
- The feedback provided to faculty will also be provided to the Dean to assist him/her in fulfilling the responsibility relative to the Course Development Agreement (Appendix C of the FFA Contract)
