arrow In conjunction with the Festival of the Arts celebration, Dave Murray from CET’s department of Welding Technology once again instructed a three week introductory welding workshop for artists. Participants learned proper techniques on how to use processes such as oxyacetylene, gas metal arc and resistance welding, as well as plasma arc cutting. Participants also had the opportunity to make their own simple metal sculptures. Photographs and video of the workshop were taken by Amy Kusmierz as part of documenting FOTA events for her digital art and technology class.

arrow Nearly 85 sixth through eighth grade “mathletes” participated in the Woodbridge Ferris MATHCOUNTS Competition on Thursday, February 21st. The event was sponsored by the Big Rapids chapter of the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers and Ferris’ College of Engineering Technology with support from Admissions. The math-enriched competition was held with the volunteer assistance of 12 CET faculty and staff, 18 CET honor students, Tau Alpha Pi Engineering Technology Honorary members, and students from team projects such as Rube Goldberg, ASME Human Powered Vehicle, and Formula SAE. Moving on to compete at the state event on March 9th in Warren will be the team from McBain Middle School as well as the top individual winner from the morning session, Ryan Draves from Morley-Stanwood Middle School, and the Countdown winner, Eli Nelson from McBain.

arrow The Plastic and Rubber Engineering Technology Programs:  Professor Ed Muccio, of the Plastic and Rubber Engineering Technology programs, recently coordinated with The Society of Engineers Decorating and Assembling Division as well as John Kaverman, President of Pad Printer Pros, to receive a $7,000 grant in the form of a new Italian-made TOSH Pad printer for our Plastics Decorating and Assembly Lab. The new TOSH Pad Printer allows marking of both flat and curved plastic products and is part of an ongoing effort by the Plastics and Rubber faculty to upgrade labs and provide students with experience on the latest technology.

arrow The Biennial WorldSkills:  More than 1,000 competitors will be testing their knowledge and skills at the biennial WorldSkills Competition in Leipzig, Germany in July. Two College of Engineering Technology students will be representing the United States due to performing excellently at the WorldSkills Americas competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Right now, Kieron Kohlmann, who won a gold medal and received “best in nation” in Auto Service Technology, and Ronald Olkowski, who was awarded the bronze medal in CNC Turning, are gearing up for the next completion phase by training with industry professionals.

arrow Motorsports Presentation:  CET’s Mike Ropele recently organized and hosted a Motorsports Presentation where Mr. Terry Dolan, Manager of Chevrolet Racing (and a 1979 Ferris Automotive Grad), and Mr. Ed Laukes, Vice President of Marketing Communications & Motorsports of Toyota, shared an overview of their company’s involvement in Motorsports. Over 100 students, faculty, and staff from the College of Engineering Technology, as well as from the College of Business, participated in the 7:00 pm. event at the Granger Center on Monday, January 28th. The presenters discussed potential Motorsports career opportunities for our students as well as explained their company’s involvement in Motorsports, such as measuring the marketing value of that involvement, their role in developing Motorsport technology, and the transfer of that technology over to the retail products they sell.
