New viruses are found all the time, so the virus definition file on your PC needs updated on a regular basis. Each of the computer support areas at Ferris run their own Symantic AntiVirus Servers that automatically update the definition fines on the systems they support. However, there are times when you should update the virus definition file manually.

If there is a known virus outbreak on campus, you should update your virus definition file immediately.
If you are only connected to the network for short periods of time, you should update your virus definition file manually.

Updating the Virus Definition File

The easiest way to manually update the virus definition file is through the AntiVirus program. A simple demonstration can be found at the following address:

http://www.ferris.edu/htmls/TatFSU/support/sats/Demos/ManuallyUpdateVirusDefs/homepage.htm

1. Right-click the Symantec AntiVirus icon on the system tray in the bottom right corner and choose Open Symantec AntiVirus.

2. Make sure you are connected to the network.

3. Click LiveUpdate.

4. Click Next.

5. Wait while AntiVirus connects and downloads updates.

6. When the update is done, click Finish.
