The Ferris State University women's cross country team, which is guided by 11th-year head coach Jeff Kavalunas, is ranked 23rd in this week's (Sept. 5) United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II National Poll.

The Bulldogs are one of three Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member schools ranked among the top 25 teams. Grand Valley State (second) and Northern Michigan (18th) are also listed in this week's national rankings. This week's ranking was the first national listing of the 2006 season.

A panel of Division II coaches votes in the USTFCCCA polls. The polls will be released weekly on Tuesdays throughout the collegiate cross country season.

The Ferris State women's cross country team captured fifth place at the 2005 NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Championships (Nov. 5) on FSU's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldog women's team finished one spot short of qualifying as a team for the national championships last campaign. FSU also placed third overall at the 2005 GLIAC Championships.

Ferris officially opened the 2006 campaign last Friday (Sept. 1) afternoon by taking part in the Jeff Drenth Memorial Invitational hosted by Central Michigan University at CMU's University Park in Mount Pleasant, Mich. The non-scoring event featured runners from CMU, Michigan State, Ferris and unattached student-athletes.

Ferris State returns to action by taking part in the Michigan State Spartan Invitational Friday, Sept. 15, in East Lansing, Mich. The event is tentatively slated to start at 4 p.m. (EDT).
