The Ferris State University women's cross country team has climbed to eighth place in this week's (Oct. 26) NCAA Division II Cross Country Coaches Association National Rankings.
The Bulldogs are one of five Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member schools ranked among the top 25 teams. Grand Valley State (fourth), Northern Michigan (fifth), Hillsdale (13th) and Ashland (17th) are also listed in the latest national rankings. Ferris was previously ranked 14th the last two weeks after initially being ranked 18th this season in the Oct. 4 poll.
Ferris moved up nationally by virtue of its third-place performance at last Saturday's (Oct. 23) GLIAC Championships held at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Hudsonville, Mich. Prior to the league meet, Ferris had won three consecutive meet championships to date this season under ninth-year head coach Jeff Kavalunas, who was voted the GLIAC's Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year for the 2004 season.
The Bulldogs, who are currently ranked third in this week's (Oct. 26) Great Lakes Regional Rankings behind GVSU and NMU, will take part in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships Saturday, Nov. 6, at Edwardsville, Ill. The meet, which will be hosted by Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, begins at 11 a.m. (EST).
The top four women's teams and the two highest finishing individual performers not associated with one of the qualifying teams will advance to the 24th annual NCAA-II Championships slated to be held Saturday, Nov. 20, at Evansville, Ind. Any other individual competitor placing among the top five finishers will also qualify for the national meet.
