The Ferris State University women's cross country team, which has captured two consecutive meet championships to date this campaign under ninth-year head coach Jeff Kavalunas, is ranked 18th in this week's (Oct. 4) NCAA Division II Cross Country Coaches Association National Rankings.

The Bulldogs are one of five Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member schools ranked among the top 25 teams. Grand Valley State (fifth), Northern Michigan (sixth), Wayne State (16th) and Hillsdale (19th) are also listed in the latest national rankings.

FSU, which is fifth overall in this week's (Oct. 4) Great Lakes Regional Rankings, has won back-to-back team championships in its last two outings this season. Ferris totaled 22 points in winning its own Bulldog Invitational (Sept. 24) at FSU's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs then captured the "Maroon" collegiate division title with 72 points at the 32nd annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational held last Saturday (Oct. 2) on Montrose Avenue Beach in Chicago, Ill.

The Loyola Lakefront Invitational's "Maroon" division included 34 schools from NCAA Division II and III as well as NAIA institutions and Canadian Colleges participating in the meet.

Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) has claimed two consecutive individual championships to date for Ferris. Irwin placed first (19:00.19) in the 5K Bulldog Invitational and then won the 5K Loyola Lakefront Invitational with a time of 18:10 in the 381-competitor field.

The Bulldogs will take part in the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships this Friday, Oct. 8, at Hudsonville, Mich. The event, which will be hosted by Grand Valley State, is set to begin at 4 p.m. (EDT).
