Feb. 26: FSU Women Garner All-Academic Team Laurels

The Ferris State University women’s cross country squad has earned 2001 NCAA Division II Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team honors as announced by the coaches’ association.

The selection of the all-academic teams were based on cumulative grade-point averages submitted by member head coaches for the 2001 fall academic term. All teams above a cumulative 3.00 grade point average (GPA) and individuals with a 3.25 GPA or higher were honored for their performance.

The Ferris State women’s team placed 20th nationally while compiling a 3.470 GPA. FSU was among four Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-member teams to place in the top 20. Mercyhurst (Pa.) College placed ninth overall (3.581 GPA), Ashland (Ohio) University was 11th (3.550 GPA) and the University of Findlay (Ohio) finished 16th (3.490 GPA). Montana State University-Billings received top honors as a result of registering a 3.880 GPA.

Senior April Smith also earned individual academic recognition. She compiled a 3.860 GPA during the fall term.

The Bulldog women’s cross country team placed ninth overall at the 2001 GLIAC Cross Country Championships under sixth-year head coach Jeff Kavalunas.


Nov. 5: FSU Women Finish 19th at Regional Championships

The Ferris State University women's cross country team concluded the 2001 campaign with a 19th place overall finish at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships held on Saturday (Nov. 3) at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis. FSU tallied 460 team points in the 20-team race.

Senior April Smith led the Bulldog women as she clocked 23:54 on the 6K course to finish 44th overall. Freshman Stefanie DeLong placed 58th in the 134-competitor field in a time of 24:31.

Sophomore Angela Herzog finished 113th overall in a time of 26:37 while senior Char Smith was 114th overall at 26:39. Freshman Mary Miller placed 131st in the field in a time of 28:12.

Oct. 20: Bulldogs Finish Ninth at GLIAC Championships

The Ferris State University women's cross country squad tallied 253 points to finish ninth overall at the 2001 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships held on Saturday (Oct. 20) at Ashland, Ohio.

Senior April Smith led FSU as she placed 22nd overall in a time of 23:46 on the 5K course. Senior Katie Chapman finished 52nd overall among the 123 runners competing at 24:46.

Freshman Mary Miller was 70th overall in a time of 25:23 while freshman Stefanie DeLong clocked 25:29 in finished 73rd. Senior Char Smith was 96th overall at 26:33.

The Bulldogs will compete in the Great Lakes Regional Championships on Nov. 3 at 10:30 a.m. in Kenosha, Wis.

Oct. 6: Bulldog Women Defeat Northwood at Ferris State Open

The Ferris State University women's cross country team tallied 17 total points to defeat Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Northwood by 20 points in the Ferris State Open on Saturday at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.

Senior April Smith led FSU as she clocked 20:28 in the 5K race to win the individual crown. Freshman Stefanie Delong was second overall at 21:06, freshman Mary Miller placed third in a time of 21:20 and sophomore Angela Herzog was fourth at 21:40 as FSU had the top four runners in the 10-competitor race. Senior Char Smith ran a time of 22:58 to place seventh overall.

The Bulldogs will take part in the GLIAC Championships on Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. in Ashland, Ohio.

Sept. 29: Bulldog Women Place 24th Overall at Lakefront Invitational

The Ferris State University women's cross country team finished 24th overall in the 41-team Loyola Lakefront Invitational held at Montrose Harbor Beach on Saturday in Chicago, Ill.

In the non-NCAA Division I race, the Bulldogs tallied 360 points to finish 13th among 27 teams competing in the 5K race. FSU scored 700 points in the overall team standings. Senior April Smith led FSU as she 71st overall in a time of 19:37 among the 383 runners competing. Her average time per mile was 6:19. In the non-Division I field, Smith placed 23rd overall.

Freshman Stefanie DeLong finished 139th overall with a time of 20:22. In the Division II, Division III, NAIA and junior college field, DeLong placed 49th.

Freshman Mary Miller clocked 20:30 to place 149th overall in the field and 56th in the small college division. Angela Herzog was 242nd overall in a time of 21:49 while senior Char Smith placed 255th at 21:57.

FSU will host the Ferris State Open on Saturday (Oct. 6) at 9:30 a.m. at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids.

Sept. 14: FSU Takes Fourth at Bulldog Invitational

The Ferris State University women's cross country team tallied 79 points to finish fourth overall at the 5K Bulldog Invitational held on Friday (Sept. 14) at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.

Aquinas won the seven-team meet with 46 points. Spring Arbor finished second with 62 points and Saginaw Valley State was third overall with 71 points. Alma placed fifth with 111 points, Schoolcraft was sixth with 124 points and Mott Community College scored 220 points to finish seventh.

Senior April Smith led Ferris State as she placed third overall in a time of 19:47. Freshman Mary Miller also placed in the top 10 as she was eighth at 20:20. Senior Katie Chapman, a 2001 NCAA Division II All-American in women's track and field, finished 15th overall in a time of 20:34. Freshman Stefanie DeLong placed 20th at 20:47. Sophomore Angela Herzog was 45th at 22:31 while senior Char Smith finished 56th overall in a time of 23:48.

Ferris State will take part in the Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. in Chicago, Ill.

Sept. 7: Bulldog Women Place Third At Aquinas Invitational

The Ferris State University women's cross country team placed third overall at the Aquinas College Invitational on Friday (Sept. 7) at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs tallied 82 points in the five-team, 5,000-meter race.

Grand Valley State won the meet with 17 points as the Lakers had seven individuals place in the top 10. Aquinas finished second with 67 points, Saint Mary's was third with 91 points and Lansing Community College totaled 117 points to finish fifth overall.

Senior April Smith led the Bulldogs for the second straight meet as she placed 13th overall in a time of 20:40. Freshman Stephanie DeLong finished second for FSU as she clocked 21:12 to finish in 21st place.

Two other Bulldog runners finished among the top 30 competitors. Freshman Mary Miller was 24th overall in a time of 21:29 while sophomore Angela Herzog clocked 21:42 to finish 25th. Senior Char Smith finished 40th in a time of 23:50.

Ferris State will host the Bulldog Invitational on Friday (Sept. 14) at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids. The meet is slated to start at 5:30 p.m.

Aug. 31: FSU Women Finish Second at Drenth Invitational

The Ferris State University women's cross country squad finished second overall in its season-opening meet on Friday (Aug. 31) at the Jeff Drenth Invitational at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Mich. Only four FSU runners took part in the 5K race as the Chippewas won the two-team meet with 15 total points at University Park Course.

Senior April Smith led Ferris State as she finished sixth overall in a time of 20:18. Freshman Stefanie DeLong was seventh overall as she clocked 21:06. Two other Bulldog runners also took part. Freshman Mary Miller placed 10th overall in a time of 21:35 while sophomore Angela Herzog was 11th at 21:40.

Ferris State will compete in the Aquinas Invitational on Sept. 7 at 4 p.m. in Grand Rapids, Mich.
