FERRIS' MIKINZIE STUART ATTAINS ALL-LEAGUE LAURELS

Senior Runner Chosen As Second Team Pick After GLIAC Championships

Mikinzie Stuart Ferris State University senior Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel) has been named to the 2008 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Cross Country Second Team by virtue of her showing this past Saturday (Oct. 25) at the league championships held in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

Stuart led the Bulldogs to a third-place team finish by placing eighth overall in a time of 22:14.5 among the 136 runners in the 6K field at Tanglewood Marsh Golf Course. Wayne Stateís Rachelle Malette won the womenís individual championship in a time of 21:24.8 overall.

GVSU placed seven runners among the top 10 finishers in claiming the womenís title with 25 points. Wayne State finished second (66 points), the Bulldogs were third (121) and Northwood took fourth (126) in the 12-team field.

The top seven runners at the league meet claimed All-GLIAC First Team honors with the next seven runners earning second team laurels. Malette picked up league Runner of the Year Award honors while GVSU's Julia Nowak was chosen as the Freshman of the Year and the Lakers' Jerry Baltes attained Coach of the Year recognition.

Stuart's eighth-place performance represented her fifth top 20 showing in as many races this fall. She has placed among the top 10 finishers four times to date, including a fourth-place effort in the season-opening GLIAC Preview Meet (Sept. 5), which was also held in Sault Ste. Marie. Stuart earned eighth place honors in FSU's own Bulldog Invitational (Sept. 19), took ninth place at the Wisconsin-Parkside Lucian Rosa Invitational (Oct. 11) and was 20th overall at the Loyola (Ill.) Lakefront Invite (Sept. 27).

The Bulldog women's cross country team, which has been ranked as high as 19th nationally this season, currently is listed fifth in this week's (Oct. 28) U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II Midwest Regional Rankings.

The Bulldogs, who are being guided by interim head coach Steve Picucci, will next host the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships slated for Saturday, Nov. 8, at FSUís Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich. Action begins with the menís 10K race at 11 a.m. (EDT) followed by the womenís 6K event at 12 p.m. (EDT).
