FERRIS STATE INKS PREP VOLLEYBALL RECRUIT ANDREA ZYLSTRA
Honorable Mention All-Conference Selection Joins FSU Women’s Volleyball Program
The Ferris State University women’s volleyball program has signed Andrea Zylstra (Muskegon/Mona Shores) to a national letter-of-intent to attend and play volleyball at FSU, starting with the 2004-05 academic year. The announcement was made by the Bulldogs’ eighth-year head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.
Zylstra, a 6-2 middle hitter, presently has accumulated 334 kills, 257 blocks and 166 digs entering her final season at Muskegon Mona Shores High School. The 2002-03 All-Ottawa-Kent (OK) Red Conference Honorable Mention selection led the Sailors to a district final finish last season.
“We’re excited to add someone of Andrea’s caliber to our program,” Brandel-Wilhelm said. “She comes from a successful high school program and has a bright future at Ferris State.”
A two-time (2002-03) academic all-state selection, Zylstra attained honorable mention all-area accolades during the 2002-03 campaign. The 2001-02 team Most Improved Player Award honoree has led MSHS to an 80-35-2 overall mark and back-to-back district championship match appearances in the last two seasons to date under head coach Kyle Kurant.
“Andrea is an outstanding competitor and determined to be successful,” said Brandel-Wilhelm. “She has a great attitude and works hard, which should help her transition to the collegiate game.”
Besides volleyball, Zylstra competed in basketball and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player in 2002. Zylstra, a National Honor Society member, also played USA Volleyball (USAV) for head coach Chip Will’s Inside-Out Mizuno 17 and under team in 2003. She twice has won state volleyball championships in Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) action.
The daughter of Steve and Vicky Zylstra, Andrea plans to major in graphic design at Ferris State. She will graduate from Mona Shores in the spring of 2004.
Ferris State compiled the program's sixth-consecutive winning campaign with a 15-14 overall record in 2003, including a third-place 12-6 GLIAC North Division finish. The Bulldogs, who won 12 of their final 18 matches this season, also reached the GLIAC Tournament for the sixth-straight year. FSU returns all 12 current squad members for the 2004 campaign.
