FSU To Face Gannon In League Tournament

FSU Volleyball The Ferris State University women's volleyball team will face Gannon for the second-straight season this Thursday (Nov. 13) in the quarterfinal round of the 2003 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Mich. The match will start at 3:30 p.m. (EST).

FSU, which will be making its sixth consecutive conference tournament appearance, previously claimed runner-up honors in 1998, 1999 and 2001. Last season, the Bulldogs dropped a 3-2 decision versus Gannon in the quarterfinal round (11/14) at Grand Valley State's Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale, Mich. FSU advanced to the 2001 GLIAC Tournament Championship match (11/10/01) for the third time in four years and dropped a 3-0 decision versus Northwood at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Mich.

Ferris is the North Division's third seed while Gannon claimed the GLIAC South Division's second overall seed. FSU defeated the Knights by a score of 3-2 (30-23, 30-20, 25-30, 28-30, 16-14) earlier this season (10/10/03) at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

The other quarterfinal round matches include Grand Valley State (#2 seed North) versus Hillsdale (#3 seed South), Northern Michigan (#1 seed North) against Michigan Tech (#4 seed South) and Findlay (#1 seed South) taking on Northwood (#4 seed North). Michigan Tech placed fifth overall in the North Division, but was granted an at-large bid over the South Division's fourth-place team based on its league record.

The tournament semifinal matches are slated for this Friday (Nov. 14) with the title match to be held this Saturday (Nov. 15). The winner of Saturday's championship match receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional, which will be held Nov. 20-22 at a campus site to be determined.

Ferris State completed the regular season with a 15-13 overall mark, including a third-place 12-6 GLIAC North Division record. Gannon is 20-8 overall entering the tournament and was 10-7 in league action.
