Sister Of Former FSU Player Is Latest Prep Recruit

December 13, 2002

The Ferris State University women’s volleyball program has signed Molly Pickvet (Pinconning) to a national letter-of-intent to attend and play volleyball at FSU, starting with the 2003-04 academic year. The announcement was made by the Bulldogs’ seventh-year head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.

Pickvet is the younger sister of former Ferris standout Kate Pickvet, who served as a student assistant coach during the 2002 campaign after compiling 772 kills and 193 total blocks in 95 matches for FSU from 1999-2001.

“Molly will be a great addition for us,” Brandel-Wilhelm said. “Her strong intensity and desire to succeed will be added strengths in our program.”

A 6-0 middle hitter, Pickvet tallied 491 kills, 312 digs and 108 service aces while leading Pinconning High School to a 65-9 overall record and the program’s third consecutive regional championship as a junior during the 2001-02 campaign. The first-team 2001-02 Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association (MIVCA) Class B All-State honoree also garnered All-Northeast Michigan Conference laurels for the second straight season under head coach Marion LaFave.

“Molly is a strong competitor and is determined to be successful,” said Brandel-Wilhelm. “She is accustomed to working hard to reach her goals each and every day, which will serve her well as she makes the transition to collegiate volleyball.”

A two-time (2001-02) Bay City Times Dream Team selection, Pickvet registered 257 kills, 115 digs and 119 service aces as the Spartans tallied a 57-18-4 mark in 2000-01. The 2001-02 league Most Valuable Player Award winner led Pinconning to both conference and district titles the last two seasons after missing the 1999-00 campaign with a back injury.

Pickvet also participated in basketball at Pinconning and twice attained first-team all-league and team Most Valuable Player accolades. She has played USA Volleyball (USAV) for the Valley Volleyball team.

The daughter of Scott and Chris Pickvet, Molly plans to major in printing management at Ferris State. She joins Keagan Krauss (Lake Odessa/Lakewood) as Ferris’ fall 2002 signees.

FSU concluded the 2002 campaign with a 24-7 overall mark, which represented the program's fifth consecutive 20-win campaign and included a second-place 15-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division mark. Ferris also earned its 11th NCAA Division II Tournament bid in the program’s history while making its fifth-straight league tournament appearance in 2002.
