1999 Bulldog Volleyball Notes
Junior Morgan Buckner (Recreation Leadership Management), sophomore Lisa Chard (Pre-Pharmacy), sophomore Amanda Kane (Criminal Justice), junior Libby Martz (Nuclear Medicine) and sophomore Erin Minnis (Management) were named to the All-GLIAC Academic Team.
Ferris dropped a 3-1 decision to Northern Kentucky at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships (Nov. 20) in Highland Heights, Kentucky. FSU finished the season at 26-8. . .Sophomore setter Lisa Chard has been selected to the 1999 GTE Academic District IV All-American Second Team for her excellence in the classroom.
The Bulldogs will be making their first NCAA playoff appearance since 1992 when they compete in Highland Heights, Kentucky for the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championship. The Bulldogs enter the competition with a 26-7 record. FSU will battle host Northern Kentucky (30-1) on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. A victory would send Ferris into the Regional Final, scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 21 at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of the Northern Michigan-Northwood match. The Regional Champion will advance to the NCAA ELITE EIGHT National Championships at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Mich. (Dec. 3-4).
Ferris took second place last weekend in the GLIAC Tournament. . .The Bulldogs defeated Hillsdale (3-0) in the quarter-finals and outlasted top-seed Northern Michigan (3-2) in the semi-finals. Northwood topped Ferris (3-0) in the Finals to win the tournament. Making the All-GLIAC Tournament team from Ferris were sophomore setter Lisa Chard and junior middle hitter Sarah VanderMolen.
The GLIAC has announced its All-Conference Volleyball Teams for the 1999 season. Representing Ferris on the First Team are sophomore setter Lisa Chard and junior middle hitter Sarah VanderMolen. Junior outside hitter Morgan Buckner made the All-GLIAC Second Team.
The Bulldogs were 13-1 at home in 1999. FSU's 14 league wins are its highest total since 1990. . .Ferris will play Hillsdale (Nov. 11, 5:30 p.m.) in the quarter-finals of the GLIAC Tournament at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Mich. . .The semi-finals are scheduled for Nov. 12 at 5:30 p.m. and the Finals for Nov. 13 at 6 p.m.
FSU's 3-0 loss to Northern Michigan (Oct. 30) snapped the Bulldogs' 18-match home winning streak. . .Junior middle hitter Sarah VanderMolen recorded a "triple double" with 15 kills, 11 digs and 14 total blocks in a 3-0 win over Michigan Tech (Oct. 29).
Sophomore middle hitter Erin Minnis hit a career-best .737 with 14 kills and 0 errors (19 attempts) in a 3-0 win at Saginaw Valley (Oct. 22). Minnis' performance tied her for the third best single-match hitting percentage in Bulldog volleyball history.
Junior middle hitter Sarah VanderMolen was named GLIAC "Player of the Week" for her performance last week in victories over Wayne State and Hillsdale. She recorded a .355 attack percentage while recording 39 kills on 76 attempts with only 12 errors. She added 39 digs, 7 blocks, 4 set assists and one service ace to help the Bulldogs reach the 20-victory plateau, including a 10-0 record at home.
The Bulldogs have won 16 straight matches at home dating back to last season. Junior Morgan Buckner became the ninth player in FSU history to record 1,000 career kills. She now has 1,008.
The Bulldogs are a perfect 8-0 at home in 1999. Junior outside hitter Morgan Buckner needs 29 kills to reach 1,000 in her career.
The Bulldogs will put their 12 match home winning streak on the line this week. The streak dates back to last season. Sophomore setter Lisa Chard has moved into fifth place on FSU's all-time list with 2,178 assists.
The Bulldogs had their 9-match winning streak snapped with a 3-0 loss at Northern Michigan (Sept. 24). Overall, Ferris posted a 2-1 record on its trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, defeating Lake Superior 3-0 (Sept. 23) and Michigan Tech 3-1 (Sept. 25). Sophomore Erin Minnis recorded the team's first "triple double" of the season at Michigan Tech with 13 kills, 12 digs and 11 block assists.
At 12-1, the Bulldogs are off to their best start since 1986. Their 8-match winning streak is their longest since 1993.
The 10-1 Bulldogs have won their last six matches and are enjoying their best start since the 1989 season. During the streak, FSU snapped a 47-match home winning streak for Indiana-Purdue Ft.-Wayne -- the third longest home winning streak in NCAA Division II history. Junior middle hitter Sarah VanderMolen had a career-high 24 kills vs. IPFW.
Junior middle hitter Sarah VanderMolen was named to the All-Tournament Team at the North Alabama Classic last weekend. The Bulldogs won three of four matches at the tournament to improve to 7-1 this season. VanderMolen leads Ferris with 93 kills and 28 blocks and is tied for third on the squad with 12 service aces.
Junior middle hitter Sarah VanderMolen and sophomore setter Lisa Chard were both named to the All-Tournament team at the Ferris State Invitational last weekend. . .VanderMolen had a career-high 20 kills in a win over Slippery Rock. . .The Bulldogs finished the tournament at 4-0.
