1998 Bulldog Volleyball Notes

November 11

Ferris setter Lisa Chard has been named "Freshman of the Year" in the GLIAC by a vote of the league's coaches. Chard immediately stepped in as a starter this season and led Ferris to a 23-9 regular season record. She ranks third in the conference in assists per game (11.08), and her current total of 1,374 assists puts her among the all-time single-season leaders in school history.

FSU head coach Tia Brandel, now in her third season at Ferris, was voted "Coach of the Year" in the GLIAC. Ferris was picked to finish fifth in the GLIAC's North Division during the pre-season, but instead placed second with a 13-6 record. The Bulldogs' 23 wins are the most for a Ferris volleyball team since 1992 and the 13 conference wins are the highest for the Bulldogs since 1990.

Ferris also placed senior outside hitter Sheri Harris and senior middle hitter Jamie Kowalkowski on the All-GLIAC Second Team (North Division). Harris led the Bulldogs in offense (437 kills) and defense (460 digs) during the regular season, while Kowalkowski was a force at the net with 349 kills and 130 total blocks.

November 8

Ferris will be participating in the GLIAC Tournament for the first time in the four-year history of the event. . .The Bulldogs will battle Gannon Nov. 12 (1:30 p.m.) in the tournament quarter-finals. A win would put Ferris in the Nov. 13 semi-finals (7:30 p.m.) against either Wayne State or Northwood. The tournament championship match is scheduled for Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. . .All matches will be at Battle Creek's Kellogg Arena.

Ferris completed the regular season with 13 league wins -- the most since the 1990 Bulldogs posted 16 GLIAC victories. . .The Bulldogs have two players (Sheri Harris and Morgan Buckner) with more than 400 kills in a season for the first time since 1992.

November 3

The Bulldogs have clinched second place in the GLIAC's North Division and will advance to the GLIAC Tournament, Nov. 12-13-14, at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. The Bulldogs are 23-8 overall and have won 11 of their last 13 matches.

Senior Sheri Harris had 45 kills in 11 games last week, including 25 at Lake Superior. She added 38 digs in that match, breaking her old school record of 34 set in 1996. . .Sophomore Morgan Buckner had 30 kills in a key win at Michigan Tech.

October 27

Senior Jamie Kowalkowski was named "GLIAC Volleyball Player of the Week" for her play in 3 matches for the Bulldogs last week. Kowalkowski, a middle hitter, averaged 3.2 kills per game for the week, notching 41 kills in victories over Grand Valley, Saginaw Valley and Northwood. She had double-digit kills in all 3 matches and hit .292 for the week. She also finished with 5 service aces, 19 digs and 10 total blocks.

GLIAC Playoff Update: Ferris owns sole possession of second place in the GLIAC's North Division with an 11-4 conference record (21-7 overall). The top 5 teams from the North Division will qualify for the GLIAC Volleyball Tournament, Nov. 12-14, at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.

Ferris is coming off a big week with North Division victories over Grand Valley, Saginaw Valley and Northwood. . .The Bulldogs have won 9 of their last 10 matches. . .Ferris will finish the season witn an 11-2 home record. . .Senior Shari Harris has moved into 5th place on FSU's all-time kills list with 1,250.

October 20

Ferris had its 5-match winning streak snapped with a loss at Wayne State. . .Freshman setter Lisa Chard has 1,013 assists this season, making her the first FSU player to pass the 1,000-assist mark since 1995. . .Senior Sheri Harris had 20 kills and 23 digs in the loss at Wayne State, then added 21 kills and a .500 hitting percentage in a win at Hillsdale.

October 13

The Bulldogs have matched their season high with a current 5-match winning streak. . .Sophomore Sarah VanderMolen recorded a triple-double with 11 kills, 14 digs and 10 total blocks at Findlay (Oct. 9). . .Senior Sheri Harris has moved into sixth place on the school's all-time kills list with 1,162.

October 6

Senior Sheri Harris has moved into seventh place on the all-time kills list at Ferris with 1,142. . .Freshman setter Lisa Chard already has more assists than any FSU player from last season. . .Ferris improved to 8-2 at home with 3 wins last weekend.

September 22

Ferris State won at Northwood for the first time since September of 1993. Leading the way was senior Jamie Kowalkowski, who had 20 kills in in the victory. Kowalkowski moved into sixth place on the Bulldogs' career blocks list with 12 this past weekend, giving her 368 for her career.

September 15

Ferris was 3-1 last week to give the Bulldogs a 10-3 record for the season. It marks the school's best start since opening with an 11-2 record in 1990. . .Sophomore Morgan Buckner led the team with 60 kills during the Bulldogs' four matches in the Grand Valley Invitational (Sept. 11-12). . .She also had a career-high 13 digs vs. Hope (Sept. 12). . .In the first set of NCAA Division II volleyball statistics released last week (through matches of Sept. 6), senior Sheri Harris ranked ninth in digs with an average of 4.37 per game. . .Harris has reached double figures in digs in 11 of 13 matches this season, including a season-high 25 vs. Bellermine (Sept. 6) at the Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational.

September 8

The Bulldogs were 3-2 last week to lift their record to 7-2 for the young season. The 7-2 start is the school's best since opening with an 8-1 record in 1990. . .Senior Sheri Harris became just the fifth player in Bulldog history to reach 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs for a career. Last week, Harris had 81 kills and 90 digs in five matches to give her career totals of 1,023 kills and 1,033 digs. Among her highlights were a 23-kill, 25-dig effort against Bellarmine and 22 kills in a win over Charleston.
