FERRIS STATE INKS CHELSEA HIGH SCHOOL’S LINDSAY TYE

Three-Time All-Region Honoree To Continue Career With The Bulldogs

Lindsay Tye The Ferris State University women’s volleyball program has received a commitment from prep outside hitter Lindsay Tye (Gregory/Chelsea), who has announced her intentions to attend and compete in volleyball at FSU, starting with the 2004-05 academic term. The announcement was made by ninth-year FSU head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.

The 5-11 Tye compiled 561 kills, 369 digs and 142 total blocks for Chelsea High School as a senior during the 2003-04 campaign. The second-team 2003-04 Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class A All-State honoree led the Bulldogs to a 38-12-2 overall mark and a state quarterfinals appearance in her final season. She previously received third-team 2002-03 MHSAA Class A All-State recognition and second-team 2001-02 MHSAA Class B All-State honors.

“Lindsay is a quick and agile athlete who’ll bring a great work ethic to our team,” Brandel-Wilhelm said. “She has a strong desire to both improve and succeed. We’re excited to add her to our program.”

Tye, a three-time (2002-04) All-South East Conference selection, totaled 448 kills, 236 digs and 131 blocks as a junior (2002-03) after registering 455 kills and 206 digs in 2001-02. The three-time (2002-03) all-region pick led CHS to three consecutive conference titles and a 128-28-10 overall mark during her three-year varsity career from 2002-04 under head coach Laura Cleveland. Tye, who attained 2003-04 Ann Arbor News All-Area First Team accolades, twice received team Most Valuable Player Award kudos and served as the squad’s team captain as a senior.

“As a left-handed player, Lindsay will add another dimension to our offense,” said Brandel-Wilhelm. “She also has tremendous speed, which is a nice addition for us.”

In addition to volleyball, Tye also participated in tennis and earned all-region honors in 2004. A three-time all-conference tennis player, Tye was the squad’s team captain in 2004 and qualified for the state meet. Tye also played USA Volleyball for the Michigan Elite 18 under head coach Ed Ruhl and was named to the 2003 Junior Olympics Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Tye, who’s the daughter of Daniel and Patricia Tye, plans to major in criminal justice at FSU. She joins Jessica Dezelski (Lake Ann/Traverse City West), Lindsay Johnson (Cadillac), Candice Marut (Pinconning), Emily Nemmers (Caledonia/East Kentwood), Ashley Ollenburger (Charlotte) and Andrea Zylstra (Muskegon/Mona Shores) as the Bulldogs’ 2004 recruits to date.

Ferris State compiled the program's sixth consecutive winning campaign with a 15-14 overall record in 2003, including a third-place 12-6 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division finish. The Bulldogs, who won 12 of their final 18 matches last season, return all 12 of their 2003 squad members for the 2004 campaign.
