All-Conference Honoree To Continue Career With The Bulldogs

Kristina Gilchrist The Ferris State University women’s volleyball program has received a commitment from prep middle hitter Kristina Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay), who has announced her intentions to attend and compete in volleyball at FSU, starting with the 2005-06 academic term. The announcement was made by ninth-year FSU head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.

The 6-0 Gilchrist will play her initial season at Anchor Bay High School under head coach Terri Szur during the 2004-05 season after spending her first three prep campaigns at Dakota High School in Macomb, Mich. She transferred this season under the schools of choice option to Anchor Bay where she will team with fellow FSU fall signee Andrea Rich (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay).

“Kristina is a dedicated volleyball player who fits our system,” Brandel-Wilhelm said. “She’s already committed to our values, goals and team expectations.”

Gilchrist totaled 356 kills, 79 blocks and 50 digs for DHS in 2003-04 while attaining All-Macomb County Second Team recognition. A first-team 2003-04 All-Macomb Area Conference (MAC) White Team honoree, Gilchrist received team Most Valuable Player Award accolades as a junior last season at Dakota. She also served as a team captain for head coach Kari Drogosh’s squad.

Besides volleyball, Gilchrist also participated in basketball at DHS. She played USA Volleyball (USAV) for the USA Michigan team coached by Dave Schmidlin.

“Kristina could compete for playing time right away with good preparation,” said Brandel-Wilhelm. “She’s a quick athlete and a strong competitor.”

Gilchrist, who plans to major in elementary education at Ferris State, is the daughter of Brian and Patty Gilchrist. She joins twin sisters Katie and Jacque Edwards (Cedar Springs) along with Rich as members of the Bulldogs’ 2005 recruiting class.

Ferris State claimed its ninth Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship in 2004 after winning the league’s annual postseason tournament. FSU concluded the 2004 campaign with a 25-7 overall record and a second place 14-4 GLIAC North Division mark. The Bulldogs also advanced to the NCAA-II National Tournament for the 12th time in school history.
